Health & Welfare Standards

Our commitment to ethical breeding is reflected in every aspect of our program. We prioritize the long-term health and welfare of every dog in our care.

Our Welfare Philosophy

Blue Woof Kennels operates on the principle that ethical breeding begins with the welfare of the animals in our care. We believe that responsible stewardship requires more than meeting minimum standards—it demands a commitment to excellence in health, environment, and long-term outcomes.

Every decision we make is guided by the question: Is this in the best interest of the dog? This philosophy shapes our breeding practices, our facility management, and our approach to puppy placement.

Comprehensive Health Testing

All parent dogs in our breeding program undergo extensive health screening before breeding and throughout their lives. Our testing protocols include:

  • Genetic testing for breed-specific conditions including IVDD, PRA, and other hereditary concerns
  • Cardiac evaluations to ensure cardiovascular health
  • Patella examinations and orthopedic assessments
  • Regular veterinary examinations and health monitoring

We maintain detailed health records and share relevant documentation with puppy families to ensure transparency and informed decision-making.

Veterinary Care Standards

Our relationship with our veterinary partners is central to our program. All puppies receive:

  • Initial veterinary examination within the first week of life
  • Age-appropriate vaccinations and deworming
  • Health certificates prior to placement
  • Ongoing monitoring throughout their time in our care

Living Environment & Socialization

Our puppies are raised in a home environment with consistent human interaction from birth. This early socialization is critical to developing well-adjusted, confident companions.

Key elements of our environment include:

  • Clean, temperature-controlled spaces designed for puppy safety and comfort
  • Regular handling and exposure to household sounds and activities
  • Enrichment activities appropriate to developmental stages
  • Limited, supervised interaction with other dogs and people

Ethical Breeding Practices

We adhere to responsible breeding frequency, allowing adequate time between litters for maternal recovery. We do not over-breed, and we retire breeding dogs at appropriate ages to ensure their long-term health and quality of life.

Our breeding decisions are made with careful consideration of genetic diversity, health outcomes, and temperament. We maintain transparent records and operate in full compliance with USDA regulations.

USDA Licensing & Compliance

Blue Woof Kennels is a USDA-licensed facility, subject to regular inspections and compliance with federal animal welfare standards. Our licensing demonstrates our commitment to operating with transparency and accountability.

We welcome questions about our practices and are committed to maintaining the highest standards of animal care and ethical operation.
